Masai Mara Safari in Kenya
Masai Mara is the ultimate destination in Kenya to view wildlife. This is the game reserve where you can be able to view large number of different species within the shortest time possible. If your goal is to see Africa's big 5 (lion, rhino, cape buffalo, leopard and elephant) this should be your chosen destination. It rivals or is ultimately better than South Africa’s Kruger Park.
Masai Mara's advantage is its the northern extension of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. This is one of the largest game reserves on earth. Animals know no territorial boundaries and careless about passports when crossing from the Serengeti to the Mara. Thus a large profusion of wildlife that is easily replenished naturally is able to roam between the 2 countries and gives Masai Mara a comparative advantage when you want to see wildlife within the shortest time possible while on business or holiday in Kenya or the East Africa region.
Located only 265 kilometers from Kenya's capital Nairobi, it is relatively close to make the drive in 5 hours. The long time taken is due to the poor road from the end of the tarmac road approximately 25 Kilometers from Narok town. If you have a bad back its advisable to fly in from Wilson Airport to any of the airstrips in the Mara. Note you would need to know which hotel you are staying so as to chose the nearest airstrip to fly in. For the adventurer the road trip is not too bad with a sturdy 4x4 land cruiser or land rover. This will give you a comfortable ride to the park and back to Nairobi.
Many people are attracted to the Mara by the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti to the Mara and the accompanying carnivores that prey on the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras that brave the great trek only to arrive at the Mara River to find a welcoming committee of resident Nile crocodiles and bad tempered hippos. The Mara river crossing is a lifetime must see event.
Most people do not realize that there are resident wildlife in the Masai Mara Game Reserve throughout the year so no matter when you visit. You will see lots of wildlife throughout the year. Recommended Masai Mara trips as below:
